Cape May is an island community rich in history and culture and the same can be said for its indigenous inhabitants. Most of the year-round residents that reside here have deep roots in the community. Their families have lived here and made contributions to the area for decades, some for over a century, in a variety of ways.
Robert Gleeson, owner of Cape May Contracting, has resided in Cape May all his life. Robert realized his true passion for construction and renovation working as a teen in his fathers contracting business. In 2013, after many years of learning the craft, Mr. Gleeson opened his own outfit. He started small and worked his way up to larger projects. As his small business grew, he began to hire talented people to the team. Robert is an excellent builder and true craftsman. With a keen knowledge of older building construction and structure, he is experienced in construction ranging from the modern era to the late 1700s. Beyond his construction skills Mr. Gleeson has made many connections in his career with other talented tradesmen, architects, and engineering professionals.
Steve Steger, a graduate of Monmouth University and Vice President of Steger Beach Service Inc., came on board to manage the business operations of Cape May Contracting in late 2013. In addition to running his families business, which has been in operation since 1933, Mr. Steger manages and aids in the growth of Cape May Contracting year round. Steve has been a dedicated member of the administrative staff and assists with a wide range of duties of the business operations including financial management, project accounting, office management, marketing, and business development. In addition, Mr. Steger is a dedicated member of the local community. He serves on the Board of Trustees of the Mid-Atlantic Center of the Arts, Board of Directors for the Cape May Chamber of Commerce, and as a board member on the Lower Cape May Regional Education Foundation.

Taylor Smith is another talented local whose family has lived in Cape May for decades. In 2013 Mr. Smith joined the team and offered his skills as a knowledgeable wood-worker and tradesman. After working in the field as a carpenter for a number of years, Taylor joined the administrative team to head the estimating and sales division. With an expert knowledge in building material, cabinetry, flooring, and fine finishes; he can match your dream product to your budget. Mr. Smith also has a good relationship with many other trades in the area, from fine tilers and carpenters to some of the best painters in the area. He has worked with a wide range of trades, and knows the ins and outs of any construction project. Taylor is also a member of the Cape Island Masonic Lodge.
Lead Carpenter / Project Manager
Mike Altieri, a childhood friend of Robert’s, came on board as Cape May Contracting’s first employee back in early 2013. When Robert was starting out Mr. Altieri was right at his side. Since then he has become an excellent carpenter, and a master of the trade. Mr. Altieri is the tip of the spear in our construction operations and will work a project until its end. He is also a project manager; communicating to the client where things stand with the project, and the next steps. With a fundamental understanding of building construction, he understands every detail of the project. With Mr. Altieri leading, your project is in good hands. Mike is also a part-time wrestling coach for the Lower Cape May School district.
John Sherba came on board in 2015 as a carpenter. Mr. Sherba has known Robert since they were kids working together on their father’s constriction sites. As he worked as a carpenter John developed his skills and now is one of the best carpenters on our staff. Mr. Sherba is skilled in many fields including, but not limited to: finish trim work, framing, structural work, and tile. He is a true craftsman in every sense of the word, and a dedicated company man. In his spare time John is an avid outdoorsman, and enjoys hunting in the off season.

After college he found himself in the building business in Ventnor City, working for a contractor. Andrew’s skills have enhanced over time, not only on carpentry and framing, but in project management.
